Worth It

Your Grocery Pocket Pal

So Australians, cost of living and grocery prices, we see it often on the news these days, but how big of a problem is it actually?

A recent research study from Canstar Blue, July 2024 reveals that on average Australians spend around 169 AUD per week on groceries, and according to the ABS, An average Australian earns around 2000 AUD weekly.

This means that Australians spend 8.5% of their weekly income just on groceries.

Even worse only 63% of Australians from the study say they purchase fresh fruit and veggies weekly, and only 51% purchase Meat/seafood/deli items weekly.

It's no wonder why in 2024, 42% of Australians find grocery bills one of their most stressful expense — a significant increase from 19% which was only 4 years ago.

The Challenge

Translating Price Trend Data into Visuals

A Google Forms survey with the title of "User Research: Cost of Living, Price Gouging and its Impact on Consumers" was conducted to gain more insights into our target audience and what they currently do to save money on groceries.

On the multiple choice question "At what point of the store visit do you price check?". 70% of participants responded "before" and 100% of participants responded "after", suggesting that an app-based portable solution should be designed instead of web-based.

As the aim of Worth It was established to be an on-the-move "Grocery Pocket Pal", the price trend data for grocery prices needed to be represented in a way that was suitable for the use case scenario of checking prices on the go.

The Approach

Red, Yellow, Green — Just Like the Traffic Lights!

Worth it uses a colour coding system to indicate how worth it a price listing is according to the 100% non-biased price trend data within the Worth It community.

Red for Stop
Yellow for Maybe ...
& Green for Go!

Just like the traffic lights!

Additionally, the icon on the saving indication section also changes according to how much savings are being made for those with accessibility issues.

A price insight page is also available on each listing for those who want a more in-depth breakdown of price trends over time.
